Sign vs. PIN

Every time you use your MasterCard® Debit Card, the amount is deducted from your checking account. However, you can make a debit card purchase in one of two ways: enter your PIN (Debit) or sign the receipt (Credit). Even though some locations automatically ask for your PIN, you DO have a choice on how to process the transaction.

So, next time you are about to swipe, here are some things to think about:

  • Able to dispute charges on your account
  • Limits on what charges can be disputed
Convenience
  • Simply sign the receipt (if you are prompted for a PIN, ask the sales clerk to run as credit)
  • Merchant's name is listed on your statement
  • Must enter PIN in public view
  • Varying merchant information listed on your statement (may only list merchant address)
