Plot twist... that was a scam!

Ever felt like you shared too much on social media? Or realized an account wasn't as legit as it seemed? Unfortunately, fraudsters are always lurking, trying to get access to your finances. Don't fall victim! Let's talk about how to spot scams before they trick you!

Social media is awesome, right? It connects us with friends, news, life opportunities and of course, the occasional meme. It’s also awesome for scammers, who use it as their playground to steal our info... YIKES! Fraud and scams are at an all-time high, with scammers using social media to gain trust, steal information and access your money.

Don’t worry, luckily there is some good news! Most scams follow predictable patterns. Once you know what to look for, you’re far less likely to fall for them.

Guaranteed returns? Guaranteed red flag!

Ever get a DM from a financial advisor, “successful entrepreneur,” or even a crypto genius, promising you guaranteed returns or generational wealth? Me too! These messages are usually straight-up scams, and the shiny promises are usually baited to grab your money fast. Heads up! RED FLAG! Here is what to look out for.

  • Quick profits
  • Invest immediately due to a “limited-time opportunity”
  • Asks for money through wire transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency
  • Fake testimonials showing unrealistic earnings

Too good to be true?

Winning hits different. Scammers know that. They fake profiles, copy logos, add a few emojis, and boom — you’re “selected.” But before you click that link or send that “small fee” … pause. Real prizes don’t ask for your bank details or password. Run- it’s a trap! Look at some other strategies scammers use!
  • Immediate action required to claim your prize
  • Suspicious links that don’t match the official website
  • Slightly altered usernames or no verification badge
  • Payment to cover shipping or processing fees

Among us? Spot the imposter

Think that “official” DM from a celeb, brand, or influencer is real? Scammers know excitement makes us act fast. They copy logos, pics, and even messages to look legit — then push you to share personal or banking info before you blink. Trust fast, regret faster. Watch out for:

  • Usernames that look similar but slightly different from official accounts
  • “Customer service” asking for login or passcodes
  • DMs asking to confirm personal information
  • Links that redirect to unofficial or misspelled websites

Social media is meant for connection—not collection. Scammers rely on urgency, excitement, and fear to hinder your judgment. Don’t let the scammers win! Protect your info like your most prized possession. Pause, think and verify before you click. You’ll thank yourself later.
